Then let not winter’s ragged hand deface
In thee thy summer, ere thou be distill’d:
Make sweet some vial; treasure some place
With beauty’s treasure,ere it be self-kill’d.
That use is not forbidden usury,
Which happier those that pay the willing loan;
That’s for thyself to breed another thee,
Or ten times happier, be it ten for one;
Ten times thyself were happier than thou art,
If ten of thine ten times refigured thee:
Then what could death do, if thou shouldst depart,
Leaving thee living in posterity?
Be not self-will’d, for thou art much too fair
To be death’s conquest and make worms thine heir.

This portrait is an exploration of the Milwaukee’s history, as well as my own experience with this place. It’s laden with symbolism and references to the things that made Milwaukee a city, like alcohol brewing, iron business and trading, some of the original plant life, and patterns that reference Milwaukee’s first socialist mayor, Emil Seidel. Juxtaposing that is my own experience here, watching. Alcoholism, cold weather, and the stale taste in my mouth.

“Cera is a senior undergraduate, studying printmaking at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Within the realm of printmaking, he is also focusing on making public art here in Milwaukee. The temporary mural on the Borg Ward Collective is part of his thesis exhibition with MIAD.”
Making artwork in the public atmosphere plays an integral role in my development as an artist. For me, it’s important to expand the art demographic past people that frequent galleries. I am uninterested in limiting myself to the well versed and educated art critiques. It’s critical in my practice to share with those that are open to a creative dialogue sparked by visual means.
My primary goal with this temporary outdoor mural is to create an image that represents the history of Milwaukee, arguably dating back to the late 1700’s, as well as represent my own experience with Milwaukee. I will be using portraiture and symbolism to create very specific references to that rich Milwaukee history of immigration, diversity and economic growth.
